Manchester Campaign

(Last updated 07/23/2010)

In July 2008, a coalition led by the San Diego labor movement and the LBGT community called for a boycott of the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel, citing the owner's early and generous $125,000 contribution to the Yes on Proposition 8 campaign despite the hotel's "gay-friendly" marketing efforts and onerous working conditions for hotel housekeepers.

In 2006, housekeepers at the Manchester Grand Hyatt began lunch hour protests against working conditions in the hotel, saying that their daily room quota had been increased from 17 to 30 rooms per shift. We have no reason to believe that Manchester has made any workload reductions to address these protests. (See link to article below)

To date, the Manchester Grand Hyatt estimates that the boycott has cost the hotel $2.4 million. Groups that have cancelled business from the hotel include: International Fund of Employee Benefits, Legal Writing Institute, Society of American Law Teachers & San Diego Association of Realtors.

The boycott is officially sanctioned by the San Diego Labor Council and California State AFL-CIO and was launched in coalition with the LGBT community. Frequent picket lines and rallies outside of the Manchester Grand Hyatt bring together hotel workers, community activists, public health advocates, elected officials & members of the LGBT community. (See attached articles and more information)

As recently as January over 800 marchers in support of marriage equality rallied in front of the Manchester Hyatt as part of a larger march for LGBT Equality.
